Asphalt Thickness and Base Depth: A Practical Guide

Residential driveways

2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt over 4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed stone handles cars and light trucks comfortably.

Light commercial parking

3 inches of asphalt over 6 to 8 inches of stone works for standard passenger stalls and light delivery traffic.

Drive aisles and entrances

Add an inch of asphalt and 2 inches of stone anywhere trucks turn or brake — these areas take several times the stress of a parking stall.

Heavy truck and dock areas

4 inches or more of asphalt over 8 to 10 inches of stone, or a concrete pad at dock aprons where trailers sit for hours.

Compacted vs. loose

Always ask for compacted thickness. Loose mix compacts down roughly 20 to 25 percent, so "3 inches" of loose material is closer to 2.25 inches finished.

Base is not optional

Adding asphalt thickness cannot compensate for a thin or uncompacted base. The stone carries the load; the asphalt spreads it.
